Welcome to Bodhimaya Pilates
In a small wedge-shaped room in Bondi Junction, Bodhimaya Pilates Centre came into being in 1999.
Three years later we moved into our current studio just up the hill from Bondi Beach and have been part of the neighbourhood since then.
We’re often asked what Bodhimaya means. It is a composite word filled with meaning. Bodhi is a Sanskrit word meaning awakening or enlightenment, and is also the name of the tree under which Siddhartha Gautama sat when he was said to have achieved enlightenment.
Maya has many meanings in many languages, with Mother being one of them. In the Advaita Vedic philosophy, maya is the illusion of transitory physical reality which obscures the spiritual reality from which it originates, and in which our everyday consciousness has become entangled.
Our centre’s name is also a tribute to a great soul , poet and author Maya Angelou. Here are three quotes from her which we feel reflect the attitudes of Joseph H. Pilates.
"Nothing will work unless you do."
"When you learn, teach, when you get, give."
"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it."
So, to us Bodhimaya means nurturing and awareness. No, we’re not Buddhists or affiliated with any sect, I just liked the name.
